Terp's Wrestling Blog: A review/celebration of Backlash

The recipe for a good pay-per-view event is finishing feuds, creating new ones, and some element of surprise. In that respect, Backlash outperformed Wrestlemania by a mile. The Big Show’s run-in to finish the Cena/Edge match puts a period on that sentence and starts a new one. HHH will probably get some time off and when we see him again, he’ll be focused on Batista. Matt and Jeff Hardy can go their separate ways. Whoever the respective world champions feud with next is somewhat a mystery, a true-for-real-honest-to-god push on the restart button. I loved Backlash. Here are some other highlights:

1. Christian and Jack Swagger put on a really solid opening match. I was a little underwhelmed with Christian’s title-winning celebration though, and I want to say that we’ll get the real thing when he wins a belt while on Raw or Smackdown, but I’m trying my damnedest to take ECW seriously. Backstage he runs into Edge and they tease a future feud. Terp gets a boner. Yes!

2. Chris Jericho beats Steamboat clean. Yes! (Moving on.)

3. Kane beats CM Punk clean. Yes! Bonus: best pay-per-view choke slam ever? I think so. Do I believe Kane is a monster? (Moving on.)

4. I had the Matt vs. Jeff ending wrong, but it involved tying someone up so I was darn close. I don’t mind this finish at all. And after seeing Matt beat Goldust tonight on Raw, I like where they are going with him. Let’s get him competing in some #1 Contenders matches now, okay? No U.S. title stuff. In fact, I’d like to hear him say that his only goal is for the world championship. Is anybody openly admitting that that’s all they care about?

5. Randy Orton beating HHH clean was amazing. Really good heightening with HHH leaving on a stretcher. Same with Edge/Cena. I think the worst thing that could have happened at Backlash would have been HHH and Cena both retaining their titles. Not only did that not happen, but both sustained serious injuries that could possibly have them missing time. This is a really good sign for the next couple of months.

Also, let’s get this guy a tripod or a countertop:
